The striped bark scorpion is the most common scorpion in Texas and the only one of the state's 18 species found statewide. Texas A&M describes adults as about 2½ inches long, yellowish tan with two broad dark stripes down the back. They hide by day under boards, firewood and debris, hunt at night, and often climb, which is why many indoor sightings are tied to attics.
Texas A&M says the sting is painful, with local swelling and itching that can last for days, but no Texas scorpion is considered lethal to people. Anyone with a severe reaction should get medical care.
Supplies: UV flashlights, door sweeps.
